Sunday 2/19/06

Hola,

Today has been full of new experiences. We began the day by waking up fairly early (7:30), which allowed us to be ahead of schedule.  By being ahead of schedule we gave ourselves time to prepare for the unique worship service which was in store for us.  We attended a Guatemalan LCMS church (early service began at 11:00), where we worshiped from Devine Service 1 in Spanish.  This was fortunate because we were able to follow along and sort of know what was happening. Along with the having the service in Spanish, the worship band was comprised of a guitar, an accordion, marimba (xylophone), and a maraca. Not all of us were sure that we preferred it over the pipe organ but we were willing to give it a chance.  We were privileged to be included in the celebration of the Eucharist and all in all the service lasted approximately 2 hrs.  After the service we were introduced to the woman in charge of the Lutheran Hour Ministry here in Guatemala.  Hopefully in the week to come we will be able to find time to see the ministry outreach they provide.

Shortly after lunch we were given a chance to walk across the street from our living quarters to the Mayan ruins of Kaminaljuyu.  The ruins date back to 1100 BC and are partially unearthed for visitors to explore.  There were plenty of photo opportunities so we will be able to share much of the experience with all of you when we return.

Currently, we are unpacking all 32 bags we brought from home to re-supply the Servants Heart volunteers.  Combined, there is about 1600 lbs of medical supplies, clothing, toys, and basic day to day essentials. As well as unpacking, we are assembling the hygiene kits to be distributed tomorrow.

We are itching to get started tomorrow.  We will be traveling to Amatitlan (45 minutes south of Guatemala City) in the morning. there we will be making house visits, conducting an adult Bible study, leading VBS for the children, and performing a medical clinic for the locals.

We ask for the continued prayer for our safety and health. Also, that our outreach tomorrow will be successful and we will be able to deliver the Gospel and provide help to those in need, according to God's will.

In Christ Alone,

The Guatemala Mission Team
