Salem’s Health Ministry Cabinet began on January 11, 1995, when we signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" with Glendale Adventist Medical Center for the purpose of developing a Parish Nurse Program. Salem’s Health Cabinet met for the first time on January 31, 1995.

Purpose Statement: The purpose of the Health Ministry Cabinet is to work together to promote and educate the congregational membership of Salem Lutheran church regarding health, healthy lifestyles and the connection between health, healing and spirituality. By using the example of love and servanthood as demonstrated by Jesus Christ, we will work together at Salem to help make "health ministry" and integral part of our congregational life and an outreach to the community.

During the past six years, we have promoted health and wholeness through sponsoring a Health Fair, Health Forums, Screenings, Blood Drives, Health Displays, etc. During this time, regular monthly meetings took place with four other Lutheran Churches with the hope of forming a co-op together and hiring a Parish Nurse. In February, 1997, Lutheran Health Ministries of the Foothills, Inc. became a reality. The five organizations are First Lutheran Church, Lutheran Church in the Foothills, Salem Lutheran Church, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, and Solheim Lutheran Home. Our first three years as Lutheran Health Ministries were spent promoting health at our individual churches as well as doing fundraising to reach our goal of hiring a Parish Nurse. Our current Parish Nurse is Marcia J. Brinkley, RN JD. God answered our prayers in a big way and the doors keep opening! Lutheran Health Ministries has received grant monies from AAL which has made possible the hiring of additional staff, a Spiritual Director, Health Promotion Coordinator, and Chaplain. The individual church health cabinets continue to offer educational health forums, screenings, etc., but now share in a much larger ministry with Lutheran Health Ministries promoting health and wholeness together and out to the community.

Salem’s Health Ministry Cabinet meets the first Tuesday of alternate months at 7:00 pm.. The members are Edna Franett, Diane Haig, Louisa Jensen, Carol Lee, Karen Smallfoot, Pam Bernier, and Shirley Youngquist.
