The Reverend Dr. Paul Weber visits Salem

Salem experienced a wonderful worship and musical event March 2, 2003. Dr. Paul Weber and his wife Florence Jowers flew to Glendale from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, to present a marvelous Transfiguration Sunday Worship filled with Dr. Weber's compositions in both liturgy and hymns. And later in the afternoon, Ms. Jowers presented an organ recital on our newly completed pipe organ.

Saturday the Sanctuary Choir had a special rehearsal with Dr. Weber to run through the music and to receive from him helps in making us sound better and provide more complete worship support for the congregation (we had already been working for weeks learning the music). Then Sunday we participated in both worship services with Dr. Weber conducting.

Between services Dr. Weber, an ordained pastor in the ELCA and an award-winning Lutheran composer and music teacher, led the congregation in a discussion of the place of music in worship. Lutherans have a great heritage of music and it should be preserved in hymns and in liturgy -- and yes we need also to include the new music, from here and from elsewhere, in our services.

In the afternoon, we listened to a wonderful concert of organ music with compositions from Bach, Albright, Whitlock, Phillips, Krebs, and Locklair -- composers from of old and from modern times. Florence Jowers gave us a marvelous program, exciting and evocative.

And then we went across the courtyard for a reception -- an opportunity to share our love of music and of the Lord with a dedicated couple who love the Lord and who enjoy expressing their love with music. We thank Paul Weber and Florence Jowers for their music and their teaching and for sharing them with us.
