Congregation lights candles to remember loved ones

All Saints Day is an important day in the church -- especially meaningful to a congregation that has been around for a long time. Many of our members are old enough to have lost loved ones. So All Saints Day is a holy day when we remember the saints of God -- that is all believers, for God has made us all holy in his sight. All Saints Day brings comfort and remembrance -- and yes, feelings of loss and grief to many of us. We remember the passing of the saints from this congregation with a tolling of the bells and on our way to communion, we are able to light a candle to remember our loved ones.

Students in Salem Lutheran School created artwork that reflected their heritage -- images that could be their ancestors who have gone on to Glory. Three-dimensional masks on flat painted boards created powerful images, hanging in the sanctuary, of the myriad people who have preserved and extended God's work on earth.
