| Adopt-A-Family: Each Christmas The Salvation Army Adopt-A-Family For the Working Poor helps identify families who, although they may be working or are temporarily out of work, are families that genuinely need a hand to help make their familys holiday season a blessing. Salem members adopt anonymous but specific families and provide toys for the kids, gifts for the family, dinner where needed. Each familys needs are different. Alcoholics Anonymous (link to site -- opens in different window: We offer space for an AA women's group to meet at 6:00pm Wednesdays in the Library . Alms: Through our alms giving we feed the hungry a nutritious lunch and/or other emergency necessities. James & Judith Bangsund (link to site -- opens in different window): We support these ELCA missionaries working in Tanzania, Africa. California Medical Center: We serve as volunteers and take cookies to the hospital. Cold Weather Shelter (link to information on YMCA site -- opens in different window): Each winter, during the rain and freezing temperatures from December through March, the City of Glendale has made available overnight shelter to help the homeless. During one week of this period, Salem members help prepare and serve a dinner at the shelter each night . Community Services: We sponsor Thanksgiving and Good Friday worship services in cooperation with other congregations. Crop Walk (link to site -- opens in different window): Churches in Glendale take part in this fund raising project to help feed the hungry around the world. Walkers enlist sponsors, walk their miles on the course with Crop Walkers from other congregations, collect from their sponsors and send in the money to feed the hungry. Cub & Boy Scouts: Once a week and on other occasional use we allocate facility use (Fellowship Hall or more) for a scout meeting; Salem sponsors Troop 176 and some of the adult leadership comes from Salem. Door of Hope is a program of restoration for homeless families in Pasadena that provides shelter, clothing and training in life-skills to help homeless families attain stability and a productive lifestyle. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (link to site -- opens in different window): We support the ministries of the national church (ELCA), including seminaries and missionaries. Food for Body and Soul (link to site -- opens in different window): Each Sunday at 1:30 pm in July and December, Salem sponsors and is the location for this special Glendale Churches' ministry. We conduct a special worship service and feed the homeless since The Lord's Kitchen, which normally offers lunch meals, is closed on Sundays. Girl Scouts: Once a week and on other occasional use we allocate facility use (Fellowship Hall or more) for a scout meeting; Salem sponsors the troop and some of the adult leadership comes from Salem. Glendale Association for the Retarded (link to site -- opens in different window): is dedicated to supporting independence in adults with developmental disabilities. Glendale Free Health Clinic provides free medical care for the homeless and those without medical insurance Habitat for Humanity (link to site -- opens in different window): San Gabriel Valley Chapter, is a Pasadena-area, people-to-people partnership drawing families and communities together to build safe, decent and affordable housing. Health Kits, School Kits, Sewing Kits, Quilts (link to site -- opens in different window): Salem Lutheran Church Women (SLCW) provides and puts together special personal health and individual school kits to forward to Lutheran World Relief for distribution around the world to poor families. Each month, in the Fireside Room, a dedicated group of Salem volunteers sews quilts to donate to Lutheran World Relief. The quilts are sent overseas to desperately poor families who may be saved from severe exposure by Salems quilts Hillsides School (link to site -- opens in different window): is a residential treatment facility, Education Center, and Family Center in Pasadena that supports and cares for children and families in crisis due to neglect, abuse or emotional stress. The Lord's Kitchen Salem offers our site to feed the needy daily in July. Lutheran Health Ministries of the Foothills (LHMF.org -- opens in different window): Salem is a founding member of this growing organization that provides health screenings, educational information, exams, and access. The Parish Nurse and other personnel are now a part of this ministry. Salem, with four other Lutheran congregations, has a Parish Nurse, Karen Nelson, on staff to help with health issues and to help discover health problems with our homebound members.
Lutheran Bible Camp: We help support the camps and their family and youth ministries in southern California. Malcolm and Barbara Collins family: We help support the teaching and translating ministry of the Collins family in central Africa. They are currently on sabbatical in the USA. Mary Magdalene Project (link to site -- opens in different window): specifically targets women prostitutes and their families by creating a home and treatment program that brings healing and reversal of fortune from a lifetime of victimization. New City Parish (link to site -- opens in different window): We donate clothes, food, etc., to help the ministry of New City Parish help the people of their close-by community. Partnership in Ministry: St. Marks Lutheran Church of Los Angeles and Salem are partners in ministry, helping to serve the needs of the community near the USC campus with a food pantry, with clothing & homelessness assistance. Red Cross Blood Drive: Salem Supports blood drives, on Sundays once a year where members give blood between services, either at Salem or sometimes at another site. Solheim Lutheran Home (link to site -- opens in different window): Salem members support Solheim using their time and talents as members of the Solheim Auxiliary. Salem's regular benevolence supports Solheim's mission to provide charitable care to residents who've outlived their own financial assets. Southwest California Synod of the ELCA (link to site -- opens in different window): We support the ministries of our local southern California district. Sunday School Offering: The entire offering raised during the childrens Sunday School hour is donated to the New City Parish to help them provide a good Sunday School program for their children. |
