Lutheran Malaria Initiative (LMI)

Project to educate U.S. Lutherans about malaria, advocate for global health initiatives and raise funds to help combat malaria.

Unprecedented collaborative effort among ELCA, LCMS and Lutheran World Relief to mobilize 8 million Lutherans in US to join in battle against malaria.

Malaria is preventable and treatable disease that kills more than 1 million yearly.

Our Southwest California Synod is one of five pilot project synods for 2010. Five more will be added next year and LMI will be launched nationally in 2012.

Goal is to raise $75 million and bring malaria under control in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2015.

Three LMI partners include Nothing But Nets which provides insecticide-treated bed nets, delivered to someone in Africa with education on its use for just $10!

El Camino Pines has pilot project--Knots for Nets--which encourages campers to raise $10 for a net through sale of friendship bracelets created in crafts program.

El Camino Pines director Rev. Glen Egertson is trained LMI coordinator and one of our synod’s project leaders. Our former associate pastor, he’ll be here in July.

You Can Help by learning more about the Lutheran Malaria Initiative at www.elca.org and going to the LMI link. Information on our partners is also available. And mark your calendars for Sun. Jul. 18 when Pastor Glen shares the LMI story with us at our 10 a.m. Adult Forum.
