Over fifty years ago Salem Lutheran Church decided to begin an elementary school to serve its congregation members. As with most beginnings, it was small, with just a few students and a teacher. It blossomed and grew, with more classes and more teachers. The church built an education building to house the classes, retained the former sanctuary to be used as a Fellowship Hall/gymnasium and helped create a playground for the children to play.

The original plan, to have a wonderful school where academic subjects would be taught and learned well in an atmosphere surrounded by the love of God -- including intentional instruction about Jesus and matters of faith -- continues today. We no longer see ourselves as a parish school for our congregation members only. We desire to serve the community with quality Christian Education that will help mold children into faith-filled, able adults.

The school now has approximately 190 students, operates classes for grades Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten and Grades One through Six. The Salem Lutheran School is governed by a School Board of six members and one chairperson, elected from the congregation. The chairperson also sits on the Church Council as one of twelve Stewards helping to govern the affairs of the congregation.

The Principal administers the school -- which includes the regular classes and special classes for music, physical education, art, computer, foreign language, and other special programs. We operate a year-long day care for non-school hours extended care. And classes have major field trips, for example, to Sacramento or Washington, D.C.

Our active Parent-Teacher-Organizaton (P.T.O.) involves all the parents and teachers in projects to enrich the students' learning and improve the school experience for the Salem school families.
